Human Capital Metrics – How Engaged Are Your Employees?

November 18, 2013

Have you heard the saying “Oh, you hate your job? Why didn’t you say so? There’s a support group for that. It’s called everybody, and they meet at the bar.” Comedian Drew Carey sums it up pretty well, and in fact he’s not far from reality.

Because the reality is that 63% of people are “disengaged, sleep walking through their days, putting little energy into their work.” According to Gallup, a Washington DC polling organization, there are twice as many “actively disengaged” workers in the world as there are “engaged” workers that love their jobs. Surprised? Maybe, maybe not, depending on the outlook at your workplace.

Since the late 1990’s, Gallup has polled 25 million employees in 189 countries. Its latest poll captured 230,000 full-time and part-time workers in 142 countries. Overall, only 13% of polled workers felt engaged by their jobs, a sense of passion for their work, a deep connection to their employer and spent their days driving innovation and moving the company forward.

Think about it, if you have 50 co-workers in your team, only 7 of them are fully engaged and working towards the bigger picture of the company. Ouch, that number is pretty low. The other 43 are daydreaming it seems.

In the United States, 30% polled responded they are happy in the workplace, 52% report feeling blah and 18% actually hate their jobs.

So what do these numbers mean to you as a company? You lose money when your employees are disengaged. It means that you are not getting optimal productivity from your workforce, you’re likely missing opportunities for growth, and there is even the potential that your employees (especially the ones who hate their jobs) are impeding the success of your company. It’s important that you gain insight into what motivates employees, and it’s critical that your employees understand how what they do on a daily basis contributes to the overall goals of the organization.

Having better insight into employee data through the use of workforce analytics, finding out what motivates them through survey/collection capabilities and getting them more engaged through social engagement features can help improve employee happiness, retention, productivity, and innovation – ultimately increasing your bottom line.
